Ladies Who Lunch: Kara Laricks Spring 2013!

Playing it safe can lead to a stable life.  But, following your passion can be more truly rewarding.  At the urging of her mother, Kansas native Kara Laricks initially took a more secure career route, earning degrees in education and going on to teach for several years.

However, her passion for design was too strong to lay dormant within her.  She enrolled in the master’s program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and began pursuing her true calling.

While producing an accessories line out of her New York apartment, Kara Laricks was cast in NBC’s Fashion Star, where she went on to become the winner of the show’s very first season.  The exposure has catapulted the designer into the mainstream and her Spring 2013 collection will be sold exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Kara Laricks' Spring 2013 Collection is inspired by a combination of 1920‘s style and Japanese matchbook covers from the same era.  Taking this inspiration and blending it with her signature penchant for androgyny, the collection is flirty and playful with a very sophisticated edge.  The tuxedo was also an important inspiration for the collection, with tux tails à la Fred Astaire added to shorts and other tux elements appearing throughout the collection.

Lesson learned, Kara Laricks bucked convention and followed her passion, turning this talented designer’s dream into a reality.
