From the moment the Editions Georges Chakra show opened at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, two words filled my mind: Red Carpet. From start to finish, this collection of cocktail dresses and evening gowns delivered with looks that were sophisticated, sleek and above all elegant. Mr. Chakra’s approach to designing this eveningwear brings the collection to the level of couture.
The collection is very artisanal and incorporates ribbing, basket weaving of fabrics and intricate drapes. While the tops of some of the gowns may be very constructed, drama is added with high slits and full flowing floor length skirts. The sleekness of the line calls to mind 1930’s film icons like Jean Harlow, with an almost Deco feeling to the designs.
The fabrics of the collection are satins, charmeuses, chiffons and metalics. The primary colors of the collection are white, gold platinum, metallic gold, metallic taupe and metallic taupe. However, there is a punch of color as well, with some gowns in either violet, bright aqua and golden yellow. A lot of the colored pieces also use ombré fabrics which give the gowns a whole other dimension. Mr. Chakra also utilizes just enough beadwork to give some of the pieces that extra sparkle, but he does so with a light hand so that it does not overwhelm the dresses.
A beautiful collection, I look forward to seeing his gowns on the Red Carpet and seeing more of his work in future collections.
