Ladies Who Lunch: EMERSON Spring 2013!
Boston based EMERSON has been showing its collections at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for several seasons and this cool women’s wear line is gaining a following with celebrities like Paula Abdul, sitting in the front row at the show. We went backstage before the Spring 2013 show to talk to Jackie Fraser-Swan about her newest collection.
Designer Jackie Fraser-Swan has tapped her creativity to produce consistent collections of beautiful clothes that speak to the modern woman. The EMERSON look meshes femininity with an edgy strength that makes this label stand out.
For EMERSON Spring 2013, Jackie Fraser-Swan took her inspiration from 1970’s Horror Films, with her biggest inspiration being the movie “Carrie”. The 70’s influence was very evident in the silhouettes and fabrics, but in a modern way that looks right for now. While there was plenty of black and white in the collection, there were also beautiful prints and pops of color like a bright blue and a vibrant red.
With such an unexpected inspiration, the EMERSON Spring 2013 is a fun very wearable collection and the show was packed with surprises from the beginning to the end!

Ladies Who Lunch: DEGEN Spring 2013!
Lindsay Degen has had a lifetime passion for knitting ever since picking up her first pair of knitting needles at the age of 3. This passion led her to become a designer and eventually start her own line DEGEN.
The all knit collection plays with interesting and innovative stitches and uses them to create wearable pieces of art that are quirky and have a definite sense of humor! Not a conventional ready-to-wear line, DEGEN Spring 2013 offers leggings, bra tops, tees, shorts and even knit accessories to glam up your Converse sneakers. Ladies Who Lunch: Helios & Luna Spring 2013!
Stylish, well made clothing is not always easy to find at an affordable price and that is exactly where Helios & Luna is making its mark.
For Helios & Luna Spring 2013, designer Patricia Clyne once again worked her magic to produce a very wearable, but also very chic collection. With Ms. Clyne’s collections, the attention is in the details and this collection is chock full of them.
An important theme in the collection is transparency, which is achieved through both the use of materials and construction. Important fabrics in the Helios & Luna collection are meshes, cut-out leathers and organza, all contributing to the transparency theme and the lightness of Spring. Organza ribbons placed in seams also emphasized the theme.
Colors for the season are vivid, pairing red with a bright fuschia, spearmint mixed with a softer green and a navy/yellow/white story. All of this is balanced with a mixture of two shades of grey to give the collection a neutral base.
Check out the Helios & Luna website to find a retailer near you and get ready to dive into Spring!

Ladies Who Lunch: Nicholas K Spring 2013!
Although my personal style is a little more traditional, good design will always entice me to consider something different. And good design is what made me sit up and take notice of Nicholas K.
Masters of modern dressing, Nicholas K produced another amazing collection for Spring 2013. The contemporary collection was full of their signature layered looks, but also introduced new fabrics and even more complicated drapes. A big surprise in the collection was the use of silk satin and a modern interpretation of the 70’s pant suit.
A more diverse color palette was also introduced with colors pulled from the works of artist Lyonel Feininger, making this a well rounded collection that will definitely win the label even more fans.
Although already a fan of Nicholas K, the Spring 2013 Collection made me an even bigger fan! I have already picked out pieces I want to add to my wardrobe when this collection hits for Spring!

Ladies Who Lunch: Kara Laricks Spring 2013!
Playing it safe can lead to a stable life. But, following your passion can be more truly rewarding. At the urging of her mother, Kansas native Kara Laricks initially took a more secure career route, earning degrees in education and going on to teach for several years.
However, her passion for design was too strong to lay dormant within her. She enrolled in the master’s program at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and began pursuing her true calling.
While producing an accessories line out of her New York apartment, Kara Laricks was cast in NBC’s Fashion Star, where she went on to become the winner of the show’s very first season. The exposure has catapulted the designer into the mainstream and her Spring 2013 collection will be sold exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Kara Laricks' Spring 2013 Collection is inspired by a combination of 1920‘s style and Japanese matchbook covers from the same era. Taking this inspiration and blending it with her signature penchant for androgyny, the collection is flirty and playful with a very sophisticated edge. The tuxedo was also an important inspiration for the collection, with tux tails à la Fred Astaire added to shorts and other tux elements appearing throughout the collection.
Lesson learned, Kara Laricks bucked convention and followed her passion, turning this talented designer’s dream into a reality.
